Some places hold history. Others refuse to let it go. The Four Aces Bar & Lounge in Hardin, Montana is one of those places—a building that has seen fortunes rise, businesses fall, and whispers of the past that never truly fade. Originally built in 1916 as part of the T.E. Gay Block, this structure once housed Hardin’s first bank, standing as a pillar of commerce before merging with the Big Horn County Bank in 1945. Over the decades, it transformed—law offices, hardware stores, and now, a bar where the past lingers in the air like smoke curling from an old cigar. But its history runs deeper. The T.E. Gay Block was once home to Gay’s Hardware, later becoming Hardin Hardware until its closure in 1961. The upstairs, once bustling with lawyers, dentists, and professionals, now serves as apartments. Below, the Four Aces Lounge, a barber shop, and remnants of its long history remain—a threshold between the present and something far older. The First National Bank, one of Hardin’s earliest financial institutions, originally stood across the street before moving into the Gay Building in 1945. When the bank merged, the space became Big Horn Drug, which operated until 1993, later replaced by the Coast to Coast Store.

The Fallen Hour team—Cdale Enick, Aaron Baker, and Jules—stepped into its depths, joined by Erinn Dresch (Four Aces Family) and Rhiannon Storey (Four Aces Staff). What started as a search for history quickly became something else entirely. Buried beneath layers of dust and time, we uncovered artifacts dating back to the 1920s, possibly earlier—pieces of lives long past. But the deeper we went, the stronger it got—thumps in the distance, voices in the void, and a corridor thick with something unshakable. Something was there. Watching. Waiting.
